Gracy - The Free-Range Magician

Created for a D&D campaign in 2004. He still appears in Chad Uchiyama's campaigns to this day.

This is his origin story.

"A man once said that magic is a set of rules and specific incantations to prove successful. That man should have been beaten to death by on oversized duck that had just swallowed a pound of rocks to help it digest that load of bullshit." ~Gracy

Gracy Seban was born like most eager magic enthusiasts, smack dab in the slums of a giant magic tycoon kingdom known then as Frethan, now known as Thenfra (the king was a bit on the indecisive side, but even with this set back, the people of Thenfra loved King Johin Kerruny). Gracy, once again being like the stereotypical slum child in a magic kingdom, swore to his family that he would rise in the ranks of magic and bring fame and fortune their way. Normally, the family laughed at him while his father beat him with Hershel, the family duck, for talking such nonsense and getting the "little ones" hopes up. Powered by only his own courage, Gracy made his way to The Academy, where he immediately realized magic was a lot harder than it looked! Also around that time, a new "CLEAN OUT THE HOMELESS" plan by King Kerruny destroyed the Seban home and kicked out all homeless people, including the newly homeless families of the slums (Kerruny was a bastard).

The Seban family, sans Gracy, died three days later from exposure.

Gracy did not hear of the news of his family's untimely deaths until about 5 months later during his final exam. There he was on Question Number 6 when suddenly the professor received a message and announced the death to the entire class. Gracy was absolutely devastated over the news as it was going to make answering Question Number 6 even harder! Luckily Gracy pulled through, finished the exam, and awaited the results as he cried in his dorm room where his roommate, Ted, was not being very supportive... in fact Ted was sleeping with Marge, Gracy's steady at the time, and refused to leave under the pretense that they were their first. Gracy finally left, after having enough of Marge telling Ted how much better he was than Gracy, and in a tear-soaked wander, Gracy wandered into The Boiler Room of The Academy. He met there a bearded man who had just finished eating a rat before asking what a student was doing in here and that if he was here about the part-time job, it was already taken by the now dead rat. Once again this threw Gracy for a loop, because he was looking to apply for the job at the end of the semester... in fact, he had his application in his pocket because he was going to drop it off after the exam.

The Boiler Room worker apologized but said the rat had some of the best credentials he had ever seen in his tenure as Head Coal Shoveler. Gracy gathered himself and explained the day's event to the worker, who then laughed at him and said "That's what you call SHITTY?" Gracy then got an earful as the Head Shoveler explained how on the day of HIS final exam, he had to watch his family be run through a meat-grinder while the other students threw paper balls at him. When he went to seek comfort, his roommate had defecated on the family duck, Chester, who had laid his eggs inside of his current wife, Gertrude! How a male duck laid eggs, Gracy will never know because he was too disgusted to ask. Running from the image of trashy mallard impregnation (TMI), the Head Shoveler tripped and fell into a secret room where he saw The Head Dean bathing himself in the juices of his ground-up family.

Gracy had to admit... that was a lot worse than what he was going through.

The Head Shoveler introduced himself as Gtrevo (but he pronounced it "Pete") and told Gracy to cheer up because down here you can hear everything, and already knew that Gracy had failed his exam. Gracy fainted. After waking up, "Pete" laughed at Gracy's inability to accept fate. Giving him a large pint (much different than a small pint, as large pints have more volume), "Pete" told Gracy that he'd teach him a better magic. A more powerful magic! The kind of magic you would go 'coo-coo for cocoa puffs' for. Gracy firmly stated that he was against illegal drug use, despite taking some 'puffs' last night. "Pete" explained that trying to control magic was impossible. Magic, much like chicken, was better to be free to mess with. Hunger aside, Gracy was then introduced to "Free-range Magic" as "Pete" liked to call it, though immediately accepted the term "Wild Magic" instead. Suddenly, Gracy had the hots for "Pete" (Wild Surge Number 84) before "Pete" smacked him and casted Remove Curse.

Amazed that this new world awaited him, Gracy tried to cast one of the cantrips he had learned earlier in the year. Immediately having a surge, Gracy made the mistake of not being prepared for the consequences and magically 1,000 lbs. of ground below him vanished as he and "Pete" plummeted to their dooms (Wild Surge Number 70). "Pete", being the fast thinker, saved Gracy, however as he went to save himself, surged and had a boulder appeared above him.

Gracy never heard from "Pete" again.

Making a sworn promise to "Pete's" missing body, Gracy decided he'd keep the art of 'free-range magic' as secret as can be. Unfortunately for Gracy, wild magic has been quite a burden for the past 3 weeks! In the time he's been away, the random surges he'd caused have brutally manhandled his face! Passing a band of thieves, in an attempt to defeat them, he shot jewels out of his hands (Wild Surge Number 36). The thieves took this as their big break and took him hostage as to always produce jewels... sadly the next time he attempted to do it, the leader became a woman and then a massive boat appeared above their heads (Wild Surge Number 85 & 88). Gracy took from them a latex mask that hadn't been destroyed during the boat madness.

Though not much for actually fooling people, it would cover up his face and with the help of his nice, custom made Old Schoolâ„¢ Edition Mage Hat, Gracy was on his way to spread joy (and more likely pain) to the world!
